Russell Louder returns with new single ‘Come Around’.
The Canadian artist has a real sense of depth to their work, illuminating vintage synth pop tropes with searing intelligence. Debut album ‘HUMOR’ won no small degree of acclaim, nominated for the Polaris Prize – Canada’s equivalent to the Mercury Prize – while Exclaim! also got behind those imperious alt-pop constructions.
New single ‘Come Around’ takes Russell Louder into a fresh realm, blending pop aspects with gothic tropes to produce something multi-faceted. Riffing on light and shade, the song offers what Russell terms a “sharp-tongued symphonic play-by-play of a duplicitous figure in my life reeling me into their web of deceit.”
The pop maestro continues: “Instead of analysing my experience, I used the writing of the song as a space for imagining what the other could have been thinking or strategising. Often I find it hard to draw on musical influence for a particular song but I remember that the early demos for ‘Come Around’ were created when I was listening to a lot of Sisters Of Mercy, Bauhaus, and Dead Or Alive.”
A bold, vivacious offering, ‘Come Around’ is whipsmart in its intelligence, and resolute in its melodic appeal.
