Roger Waters has been condemned by Ukrainian officials after accepting an invite to speak to the UN Security Council from Russia.
The Pink Floyd legend is having an eventful week. His continued comments on the War in Ukraine and the political situation in the Middle East led to an extraordinary attack from Polly Samson. The writer and journalist is married to Roger Waters’ former Pink Floyd band mate, and branded him “anti-semitic to the core”.
The songwriter issued a statement of his own threatening legal action, before accepting an invitation from Russian diplomats to speak via internet link to the UN Security Council.
The bizarre move saw Roger Waters address senior international diplomats. He called the war “illegal” and condemned it in the “strongest possible terms” – yet he also said “it was not unprovoked” and went on to condemn unnamed “saboteurs”.
This is a new low for the UN – and that’s saying something.

In response, Ukrainian diplomat Sergiy Kyslytsya – who attended yesterday’s (February 8) UN Security Council meet on the delivery of weapons to Ukraine – threw scorn at the musician. Noting that Pink Floyd had previously been banned by the Soviet Union after protesting a similar invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, he then mocked Roger Waters’ stage props.
“It is ironic, if not hypocritical, that Mr Waters attempts now to whitewash another invasion,” Kyslytsya said. “How sad for his former fans to see him accepting the role of just another brick in the wall – the wall of Russian disinformation and propaganda.”
“Keep strumming the guitar, Mr Waters. It suits you more than lecturing the security council on how to do its job. No flying pigs here, please.”
The remaining members of Pink Floyd released ‘Hey Hey Rise Up’ last year, a track whose release saw all proceeds go towards Ukrainian charities. Recently, Roger Waters has in turn claimed he is re-recording their prog opus ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’, commenting “let’s get rid of this ‘we’ crap”.
