Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds have shared new single ‘Pretty Boy’.
The song was teased on socials, with the songwriter promising a Hallowe’en surprise for fans. Well, October 31st is here, so will it be a trick, or a treat…?
Out now, ‘Pretty Boy’ hinges on that tick-tick digital percussion, supplying the song’s heartbeat. The gliding neo-psych guitars have a real sense of grace, with Noel Gallagher swapping arena bombast for something more restrained, and introspective.
Switching it up once more, the song was built at the Oasis legend’s Lone Star studio in North London, co-produced by Paul ‘Strangely’ Stacey. The chiming guitars are augmented by another Manchester hero, with Johnny Marr sitting in on the session.
The new song is the first outing of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds since 2017’s ‘Who Built The Moon’, which Clash reviewer Gareth James described as “his best work in an age and an interesting marker for a Weller-esque creative purple patch from an artist rediscovering their sense of purpose. As winter descends, these songs offer up an enveloping array of melody and an endearingly gleeful playfulness that is hard to resist.”
The new song features a man engaging with his make up for a drag routine, with Noel Gallagher commenting…
“For this new record it was the first thing I wrote, the first thing I demoed and the first thing I finished, so it’s only right that it’s the first thing people get to hear. Massive shout out to my mainest man Johnny Marr for taking it somewhere special. Oh … and watch out for a cameo from me in the video … first one to spot me wins a bag of Flamin’ Hot Wotsits Giants!!”
Tune in now.
