Nottingham-born rapper Kam-Bu is making his first release of 2022 with versatile pulser ‘Pickney’.
Appointing none other than Fredwave on production duties, the single takes charge with its bouncing bassline and glitching soundscapes. It’s an intentionally disorientating listen, intricate in its different elements and unafraid to flick between pitched up vocals and tempos. Nevertheless, Kam-Bu follows through his train of thought, penning an introspective deep dive into life as a 25-year old in South London.
Inspired by sound system culture and his Jamaican roots, the single arrives alongside visuals that see the riser hit stages all across the country. Since his debut in 2021, Kam-Bu has maintained a mature rawness and honesty in his craft, now gracing the crowds of All Points East, Glastonbury and Pitchfork Paris. This year also saw the rapper merge forces with Converse for a panel alongside Tyler, The Creator.
Navigating between the realms of electronic music and UK rap, the sonics of ‘Pickney’ are demonstrative of a bold artist who is ready to take chances.
He comments: “‘Pickney’ is a glimpse into the thoughts that plague my mind in moments of madness. In the rave, after the rave, that days after a rave. Hungover pessimistic reflection. The beat Fredwave made in the studio that day just brought that energy out of me”.
