Recorded at his studio Bisquiteen in Western Massachusetts, What Do We Do Now is Mascis’ first solo album that options full drum and electrical leads, though the rhythm elements are nonetheless all acoustic. The album options visitor musicians, together with Western Mass native Ken Mauri of The B-52s on keys and Ontario-based polymath Matthew “Doc” Dunn on metal guitar.
What Do We Do Now started to return collectively through the waning days of the pandemic. Utilising his personal Bisquiteen Studio, J began engaged on writing a sequence of tunes on acoustic with a unique dynamic than the stuff he creates for Dinosaur Jr.
“Once I’m writing for the band,” he says, “I am all the time attempting to consider doing issues Lou and Murph would match into. For myself, I am pondering extra about what I can do with simply an acoustic guitar, even for the leads. In fact, this time, I added full drums and electrical leads, though the rhythm elements are nonetheless all acoustic. Often, I attempt to do the solo stuff extra in order that I can play it on my own, however I actually wished so as to add the drums. As soon as that began, all the pieces else simply fell into place. So it ended up sounding much more like a band report. I dunno why I did that precisely, but it surely’s simply what occurred.”
